Come tanti altri

Ahmed, Atene, Giugno 2015.

Many refugees and
asylum seekers have their lives stalled for years whilst in the
process of being granted asylum or permit to stay. When we truly
understand the meaning of this, we can grasp the hard-stance. The
detention, the shelters, the lack of a permit to work, the charitable
donations to get by. For many of the refugees and asylum seekers
this life in limbo goes on for years upon years. Racism,
discrimination is intertwined in many layers of this system. The
stories being collected are of an endless fight for survival, whilst
in accommodation centres, shelters for prolonged periods of time.
Some communities face further challenges as being singled out for
their race or religion. The black communities are often the most
verbally and physically harassed, discriminated and even attacked.
Thus, having no residence permit and in a limbo situation leave these
communities in greater vulnerability for becoming a target of hate
crimes.

The photo that I am
sharing belongs to Ahmed, a refugee originally from Sudan taken in a
Sudanese centre in Athens, Greece. Ahmed like so many others in the
centre has been waiting for a permit that would allow him to work for
a very long time. He spends his days in the centre where he feels
safe. Like so many others in the community he has often been picked
up from the police and taken to the police station only to be
released many hours later. If he is not like, he will be then sent
back to a detention camp.

Caption of the photo:

‘Even
if you have the pink paper, you cannot apply for work or leave the
country. It can be revoked at any time and then you are back in the
detention centres. This happens frequently, particularly with us,
refugees from Sudan, because we are often randomly taken to a police
station’.
