musulmani in Grecia. Approssimativamente 600,000 musulmani vivono in
Atene.

A former garage underneath a
building serves as an illegal mosque in Neos Kosmos, which it has
been called Al Salam Mosque. Copyright: Cinzia D’Ambrosi.

Salam. Copyright: Cinzia D’Ambrosi

Alongside the Imam of the Sudanese community in Athens, I walked
to two sites, basements garages, been shut by the Greek authorities.
Even lingering outside the door of one of these sites, a woman
started to shout at us. I was later told that this is not unusual.

Hassan, a refugee from the Sudanese community says: ‘The
authorities have closed the mosque. We have been given excuses. They
told us that the neighbours complained of our music. We don’t play
music.‘

Habiba, originally from Morocco, says ‘Sometimes
I am shouted at and told to leave the premises of a shop because I
wear a head scarf”.

Anisur,
from Bangladesh : ‘Officials
don’ t make it easy for us. We are treated differently.’

There are around one million Muslims in Greece and approximately
600,000 Muslims who live in Athens. Like many who live in other
European countries, face difficulties in practising their religion.
They would like to express their faith through prayer in an
appropriate place of worship, however there is no official mosque in
Athens or Greece. Up until now, the Muslim communities are forced to
pray in hidden informal spaces such as disused garages and basement
spaces.
