Il caso di Meisy

di Cinzia D’Ambrosi

Meisy

The
case of Meisy

Meisy
is pretty, slightly-built, an infectious smile and looking at her it
is hardly possible to imagine that she is fighting a clinical
depression. Meisy lives in Athens, has opened a coffee shop with her
Greek husband, with whom she has a child and all seems perfect. Yet,
Meisy is from Ethiopia and this is an obstacle for any happiness in
her life.

Meisy
is on a daily basis fighting against racism in many forms, verbal or
discriminatory. There are days in which Meisy finds it hard to leave
her home when bouts of depression take her over. These days seem to
become more frequent with time.

She
became clinically depressed following a pretty bad incident in which
she risked being beaten up by members of the Golden Dawn. Meisy had
just got off from a train when a woman approached her and held her
tightly shouting at her to stay put. At first, Meisy thought that the
woman was looking for some assistance, but Meisy was soon able to
understand from the woman’s conversation on her mobile asking that
she was held so that members of the Golden Dawn could come to beat
her up. The woman call was about her holding a black woman at the
station and to come over quickly. Meisy called her husband on her
phone after her repeated attempts with the police that never arrived.
Her husband frantically went to the police station and demanded that
they would go with him to help Meisy. When they finally arrived
Meisy was left in shock whilst the woman had run away. She was later
found by the police but but never charged.

Meisy
is subjected to verbal abuse almost everyday, however since she
opened her coffee shop racism has become more collective. The coffee
shop is in an area where many people foreign nationals are of African
origins and thus has served a lot this communities. Thus, it has been
the subject for many police incursions, stop and searches even to
customers, fines for loud music (although Meisy does not even have a
music system in the coffee shop). They have been disparate requests
to look at their audits, and the food certificates for hygiene (even
before they even opened the kitchen). The levels of abuse that Meisy
has had to go through is hard to believe. She has fought back in many
ways including talking to media about her situation. Unfortunately it
has not received as much attention as she wished. Recently and this
has hit her hard, residents in the buildings around the coffee shop
have signed a petition for it to close naming the congregation of
people in the coffee shop being an issue of security! The person
that has started this petition is a woman who has verbally abused
Meisy in more than one occasion.

The
case of Meisy is not unique.
