Stavo studiando all’università.

A story from the North

Early morning, sitting in a coffee shop among locals and holiday goers, the three of us seemed rather at odds with the rest of the people surrounding us. L. and her mother had agreed to meet me. This time to share their story. They had arrived in Iceland 40 days earlier.

“Leaving one’s country, connections and home is a difficult decision. It becomes really painful if you have not choice but to leave your home and country for survival. When you have been discovered to be a practising Christian in Iran, you have no choice but to leave. We had a home, I was studying at University. One day, the government finds out that we are Christians. We had no choose but to leave” L. recounts.

Their sudden departure took them to Greece. It did not occur to them that they would not be believed or that they would have faced detention and harsh treatment. Their genuine need for help led them to immediately report to the police and plead for their help. However, they were immediately separated and put in jail.

L.’s sister, who is a minor was put in the same cell as everybody else. They had an horrible time. No one would tell them why they were detained. They were only told that they were not Syrians and so they did not need any help. They were kept in detention without any information. L.’s mother’s health deteriorated as her medicines were taken away from her.

L’s continues: ‘In the same cell, they were women with addictions. My sister witnessed things she should have been spared of. Today she is having psychological difficulties.’

The cell was on a basement ‘The worst was not being able to see sunlight. For an entire month we did not see daylight. We hardly had any food.’

Then, one day they were taken out and told to sign some papers. Even if they had no idea of the content, they were forced to. They were left to go after that.

They realised that they had to leave the country to be able to have any future. A man arranged for them to hide in a truck carrying watermelons. For two days they hid, without any food or any idea of where they were heading to they stayed on this truck. Finally, they were outside an airport. they were given some clothes to change into and passports and told that once they would arrive to destination, they would need to head to the police and explain what has happened to them. They passed the control and boarded a plane. Only when they landed, they found out that they were in Iceland.

Today, they are waiting to hear from the Icelandic government its decision on their case. In the meantime, L. explains that she is sad that she spends days just waiting, when she could be studying or working. She has been told she is not allowed to. Sadly she says “people thinks of you as being different because you are an Asylum seeker”.

“We are waiting for our life to begin again”.

Image copyright © Cinzia D’Ambrosi

At the Centro Astalli Sud in Naples,Italy, refugees and asylum seekers find shelter, meals, legal and medical assistance. Most of the occupants have made their journey from Lybia to Sicily, where those that are registered are sent to various centres in Italy. The Centro Astalli Sud is one of these. Spending some time at the centre, I learned of their stories, experiences and aspirations.

Nonetheless, the painful ordeals of an existence in fear of being killed in conflict, wars, extreme poverty and hunger. There is no way out but to flee.

Those that have shared their experiences have recounted acts of extreme torture and segregation in Lybia. They have felt that being black, Christian made them further vulnerable and at the mercy of being tortured, detained or killed. They have witnessed horrible things but the worst of it all has been the lack of a space where they could feel safe. It appeared to be none. E. “Anybody could turn around , decide to use the gun, aim, kill and would not be prosecuted. Even children are carrying a gun.”

The level of segregation is also a concern. They have shared of being kept in big numbers in courtyards for days with hardly any water or food and knowledge of what was going to happen to them.

Today, in Italy they are left dealing with their scars, mostly of psychological nature. The physical torture may go away but the emotional toll needs a different care. Combining the stress and anxiety of their lives in a limbo state with the stress of what they have witnessed, experienced and felt is leaving them completely alienated. The need for mental health care but also that of a faster integration is very important.

“So long as there are large numbers of pretty desperate migrants marauding around the area, there always will be a threat to the tunnel security. We’ve got to resolve this problem ultimately by being able to return those who are not entitled to claim asylum back to their countries of origin.”

From Africa, Fleeing for Safety

Among the reasons for driving people to make dangerous journeys are conflicts in Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan. However, turmoil, deteriorating conflicts are also prompting people from South Sudan, Ethiopia, Somalia, Lybia, Nigeria, Democratic Republic of Congo to seek shelter and security in Europe. These countries have been in turmoil for a very long time but now are reaching a tipping point over an increasing security crisis. There are millions of refugees IDPs dispersed in Africa and millions of deaths and casualties and the number of those fleeing trying to save their lives are surging. Yet, these issues have not attracted much attention. African refugees in Europe have not had sound security and protection, mostly are stranded, waiting for their refugee status to be cleared so that they can work and build their lives. Instead their years in a bureaucratic limbo are leaving them vulnerable to exploitation and hate crimes. Even more so as their unsettled ‘status’ is tainted by reports in which they are often referred to as economic migrants. Last August, in one interview with BBC (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-3384286?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss) British Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond in which discussing the situation of refugees in Calais he would use the term marauding, which by definition means going about in search of things to steal or people to attack. “So long as there are large numbers of pretty desperate migrants marauding around the area, there always will be a threat to the tunnel security. We’ve got to resolve this problem ultimately by being able to return those who are not entitled to claim asylum back to their countries of origin.”

Unfortunately and irresponsibly, these comments have taken a hold in people at a local and international level generating hate filled media, demonstrations, attacks on refugee accommodations and attacks on individual.

Even more, the migration crisis is initiating division in Europe and it has often been used as a political tool, including far right mobilisation, nationalism and the perpetuation on the idea of defending borders… mostly using the reference of an invasion of a ‘mob’ of economic migrants.

What next?

Since the closure of Greece’s northern border and with it the Balkan migrant route, over 46,000 refugees are stranded in Greece and an estimated 5,000 have retorted to Piraeus port in Athens.

Stretched out in passenger terminals, many have stayed in the most rudimentary conditions, coping with lack of water facilities, crowded conditions, and a minimal resources. The pressure on clearing the terminals as the summer holidays season starts and trying to ease the situation has led to various interventions. Clearing the terminals has been one of them. Recently, the government has opened new temporary reception centres, including one west of Piraeus hushing them in. What is next for the thousands of refugees? Unfortunately, even statics do not promise much, the assessment process is very slow leaving many stranded for months, if not years. Increasingly, many are realising that there is not much hope moving to other countries in Europe and are starting to find ways to navigate society. Some have moved into disused spaces transformed into informal centres by local activists. Yet, thousands are trapped into a life of limbo.

The event had a great turn out. Alessandra Montesanto from PerDirittiUmani set the Talk off with a question about the meaning of the words opening a slide presentation ‘Hate Hurts: to understand, to document and to change’.

I explained that these words are very connected to the way I do my work and to what I believe photojournalism’s work should do. The main objective being presenting it to the wide public and in particular those in power to make positive changes for the issues being told. The work as being a channel for this to happen or a catalyst towards this to happen through an increased awareness.

In the process I am looking at ways that most effectively work for this purpose. Being present in the Cultural Centre Asteria to show ‘Hate Hurts’ and the stories of hate crimes victims through a photography exhibition and talking about the issue in the Cultural Centre Asteria belongs to this very process.

Some highlights were very interesting thoughts on the dynamics built around hate crimes. Members of the public suggested that one of the causes is being an increasing nationalism or perceived nationalism in Europe. I cannot but agree that extreme right wings getting stronger support in Europe has ties in with the political ideology of defending one’s national ideologies and borders.

Paolo Pobbiati showed a recent compiled research from Amnesty of countries that have taken the most of refugees. These were mostly from outside of Europe: Turkey, Jordan, Lebanon, which gave another perspective to the refugee crisis.

During the course of the evening, photographs from the photography project ‘Hate Hurts’ were projected and I was asked to run a commentary on some of the people’s stories represented in the photographs. The stories highlight the plight of victims of hate crimes looking at its various forms from psychological crimes, verbal and physical. Many of the photographs also showed the extend of the silent pain going through thousands of refugees and migrants in a state of bureaucratic and political limbo.

Captions:

Many like A. are without a permit to stay for years.

Conversations

“We could do an experiment. If we go out together from this flat, you are white and I am black, in a little time the police will be stopping us. I promise you it will happen.” says Abdul. “ Why would they stop us?” I ask. “They would think that there is only one reason for which you will be walking with me, that I am selling you drugs. They would not consider that we could be friends”.

A conversation like any other, yet its meaning reveals and confirms that racism is so embedded that is like a matter of fact knowledge among the refugee community. Sadly, it is its resignation that is very difficult to digest. Khamis, sitting at the same table adds: “I am from Sudan and I am in Athens from 8 years. I still don’t have a permit to stay. I know people that have been waiting from 15 years. What kind of life is this for us? Some of us even have children now and even they don’t have papers. Children are left without a citizenship, paperless. I found myself often to participate in similar conversations. Frustration and desperation of a life on the margins are rampant. Sadly, there is no much hope for a faster process for cases to be evaluated and their status cleared. At the same time, there is no significant effort for a dignified integration.

The psychological effect that migration camps, detentions have on refugees are numerous. Even if migration camps are open and asylum seekers are free to go out and come back, they are immobilized by bureaucratic barriers. They cannot really leave until a decision on their legal status is reached, and are not allowed to welfare support. Thus, the effect of a camp even if it is not fenced, holds equally the psychological representation of being detained. Prolonged and systematic detention has devastating effects on physical and in particular mental health. In one of their latest reports, MSF (Medicine San Frontiers, Greece) cites a number of medical problems being detected including respiratory, gastrointestinal disease and a number of stress and trauma related diseases such depression, anxiety. For example, in Piraeus port and in Elliniko where thousands of asylum seekers have found shelter, there are not facilities for running water, thus it is not possible to wash. An asylum seeker from Afghanistan says that one needs to queue for a glass of water. Many of the asylum-seekers have lived traumatic experiences and being a victim of torture and continue to live traumatic experiences, which are aggravated by the prolonged limbo conditions. Similarly, Melak, a lady from Syria has been 20 days in the camp in Piraeus and has had no access to water and Benar, 7 months pregnant mother from Syria is finding it very hard particularly as food is scarce. There is a need to improve conditions in these spaces and to create a more rapid system for the legal process to take place.

The objectification of a human being

The objectification of people and their containment in large disused spaces are becoming the norm. The refugee crisis is unfortunately becoming more and more about ways to contain the large number of people seeking shelter and protection. These are slowly being transformed into hot spots and detention centres. Beyond these walls, we would not know much but news provided by NGOs and charities given permission to enter. In between these changes, access to open camps are becoming more difficult. I am not sure how I managed to access entry in Ellinikon International Airiport in Athens. I wanted so much to enter and witness the state of things, and I was just lucky to enter (or unlucky to see). One boy from Afghanistan led my way through the airport, which it has been closed down since 2001 and now the home of hundreds of families. The reality is sad and devastating. The worst part is that looking from the outside people seem to be fenced in. It is disturbing to see. Unfortunately, being able to have a shower is not possible. Families with children have begged for water to wash. A few lucky ones have been able to wash by the generosity of Greek people opening their homes to them. So in areas indoor people rest and live on a blanket given by the UNHCR. There is no space between a blanket to another. Sleeping, eating, living in endless rows of humanity. Those that have been given a tent, sleep outdoor. Their number is increasing by the day as many are returning from Idomeni closed border.

Hate crimes in Europe: invisible Barriers

We see the physical barriers from one country to another and the struggle of asylum seekers and refugees seeking security and safety to pass through these barriers, being pushed away. Yet, their struggle does not end there. Unfortunately, there are also invisible borders within the physical borders which have as a common objective that of limiting the movement of those unwanted, and considered dangerous through a process of containment. Invisible barriers are built in mechanism which overall project the impenetrability of a country but also would keep those unwanted away from entering the system of that country. Therefore, many are left roaming within this limbo without housing, work, health provision and a registration that would allow them to move forward in their lives. Typically, waiting for registration an putting through as an asylum seeker can take from one year to fifteen years. Asylum seekers are also required to renew their pink card every three months at a police station but the waiting time can often take up to two weeks leaving them without a documentation and vulnerable to possible detention. Pink card holders are not allowed to work, thus they cannot afford rent, which hinders the possibility for receiving the letter that would give them a chance to register their claim.

A volte mi picchiano.

https://vimeo.com/156824223?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss

Surviving day after day

Migrants and refugees are vulnerable to exploitation, physical, verbal abuse and discrimination. Some of the victims do not have faith in reporting crimes. They feel that are not heard as they do not have a permit to stay. To some, reporting has been a further exploitation in that some lawyers have not represented them or hardly done their job even if they have been paid. Trying to survive for some it has also meant having to take work outside legal frames which has developed in a large scale human resources exploitation in various countries. The story I am sharing this week regards a boy that has left Bangladesh to earn a living for his family. He sells garments that he buys from warehouses. He is not technically employed. He is often taken to the police. In his own words: “Some days, it is street and police station and then street and police station. I have often been taken to a

police station. Sometimes I am beaten. Sometimes I am asked money to be released. Maybe I will stay for a little longer, 5 months and then I go.”
