The consequence of the EU-Turkey Deal: WatchTheMed Alarm Phone documents
illegal push-back operation in the Aegean with Frontex present:

“The Turkey-deal is that inhumane: This was a brutal and illegal
push-back operation by the Greek Coastguards, and Frontex watched” –
this is how Hagen Kopp of the WatchTheMed Alarm Phone summarized the
incident that took place in the early hours of the 11th of June, near
the Greek island of Chios.

The hotline project to support boat-refugees reconstructed the events
through direct exchanges with those affected. GPS-data proves the
journey and the position of the boat on the Greek side of the maritime
border. Photos that were secretly taken with mobile phones document this
unlawful push-back. 53 refugees, including 14 children had left from
Cesme/Turkey on a rubber dinghy and moved toward Chios.

Within Greek territorial waters they were stopped by a vessel of the
Greek Coastguards. Those seeking protection, among them refugees from
Syria, Iraq and Eritrea, were then forced at gunpoint to transfer onto a
boat of the Turkish Coastguards and were then returned to the Turkish
coast. “This whole incident occurred in the presence of two Frontex
vessels and demonstrates once more the direct involvement of the
European border agency in grave and inhuman practices”, said Hagen Kopp.
WatchTheMed Alarm Phone calls on those politically responsible to cease
these inhuman practices immediately.

Mentre si sta sgombrando il campo di Idomeni, il campo profughi più grande di Europa, noi proponiamo oggi la rubrica “Hate crimes in Europe!” curata da Cinzia D’Ambrosi sul suo progetto intitolato “Hate hurts”

L’Inaugurazione della mostra fotografica ‘Hate Hurts’ il 12 Maggio presso Centro Culturale Asteria di Milano si e’ aperta con un incontro organizzato dall’Associazione per i Diritti umani alla presenza di due ospiti Paolo Pobbiati, portavoce della Amnesty sezione Italia e Cinzia D’Ambrosi, fotogiornalista.

L’evento ha avuto una buona risposta dal pubblico che attivamente ha preso parte all’incontro. Alessandra Montesanto ha aperto la discussione con il chiedere del significato delle parole: “Per Capire, Per Documentare e Per Cambiare” proposte all’inizio della presentatione digitale del progetto documentario.

“Queste parole racchiudono in essenza le motivazioni per il lavoro che svolgo ed anche che cosa rappresenta per me il foto-giornalismo. Per esempio, sensibilizzare il pubblico su tematiche toccate dal lavoro ma e soprattutto far si’ che il lavoro prodotto sia visto da coloro che hanno il potere di cambiare e migliorare le leggi esistenti. Il progetto fotografico documentario ha, quindi, una funzione canalizzante in questo processo.” spiega Cinzia. Continuando che: “ in questo processo cerco il modo migliore di presentazione e cio’ cambia da progetto a progetto dipendente al messaggio che intendo portare avanti. Presentare ‘Hate Hurts’ al centro Asteria per portare all’attenzione le storie di coloro che hanno subìto crimini d’odio rientra in questo pensiero.”

Ci sono stati molti contributi interessanti dal pubblico presente ed in particolare il legame tra i crimini d’odio ed un crescente nazionalismo in Europa che provoca un supporto sempre piu’ vivido verso le vedute d’estrema destra. Tutto cio’ alimentato da discorsi politici basati sull’idea che abbiamo bisogno di difendere le nostre identita’ nazionali e i nostri confini da ‘un’invasione di rifugiati e migranti’. Anche se queste opinioni non sono tratte da una ricerca solida, sono spesso presentate come fatti.

Paolo Pobbiati ha presentato alcuni dati di una recente ricerca di Amnesty da cui si evince che i Paesi ad aver accettato il numero maggiore di rifugiati, sono la Turchia, la Giordania e il Libano aprendo una prospettiva diversa sulla crisi dei rifugiati.

Durante il corso della serata, è stata proiettata una selezione delle foto dal progetto ‘Hate Hurts’. Le immagini risaltano l’influenza negativa dei crimini d’odio che prendono varie forme: da quella verbale, a quela fisica e psicologica. Molte delle foto alludono anche alla sofferenza silenziosa dei rifugiati e migranti in uno stato di politico e burocratico limbo.

The Opening of ‘HATE HURTS’ Photography Exhibition on the 12th May at the Cultural Centre Asteria in Milan was marked with a Talk Event organised by perdirittiumani.com (for human rights) with invited guest speakers Paolo Pobbiati, Spokesman for Amnesty International Italy  and myself photojournalist.

The event had a great turn out. Alessandra Montesanto from PerDirittiUmani set the Talk off with a question  about the meaning of the words opening a slide presentation ‘Hate Hurts: to understand, to document and to change’.

I explained that these words are very connected to the way I do my work and to what I believe photojournalism’s work should do. The main objective being presenting it to the wide public and in particular those in power to make positive changes for the issues being told. The work as being a channel for this to happen or a catalyst towards this to happen through an increased awareness.

In the process I am looking at ways that most effectively work for this purpose. Being present in the Cultural Centre Asteria to show ‘Hate Hurts’  and the stories of hate crimes victims through a photography exhibition and talking about the issue in the Cultural Centre Asteria belongs to this very process.

Some highlights were very interesting thoughts on the dynamics built around hate crimes. Members of the public suggested that one of the causes is being an increasing nationalism or perceived nationalism in Europe. I cannot but agree that extreme right wings getting stronger support in Europe has ties in with the political ideology of defending one’s national ideologies and borders.

Paolo Pobbiati showed a recent compiled research from Amnesty of countries that have taken the most of refugees. These were mostly from outside of Europe: Turkey, Jordan, Lebanon, which gave another perspective to the refugee crisis.

During the course of the evening, photographs from the photography project ‘Hate Hurts’ were projected and I was asked to run a commentary on some of the people’s stories represented in the photographs. The stories highlight the plight of victims of hate crimes looking at its various forms from psychological crimes, verbal and physical. Many of the photographs also showed the extend of the silent pain going through thousands of refugees and migrants in a state of bureaucratic and political limbo.

L’oggettivizzazione di un essere umano

L’oggettivizzazione dei profughi e il loro contenimento e’ diventato di norma. La crisi dei rifugiati sta diventando sempre piu’ una crisi di contenimento di un numero elevato di persone. Purtroppo queste aree urbane, ad uso di contenimento, si sono lentamente trasformate in hot spot e centri di detenzione. A causa di queste mura non avremo piu’ notizie di cio’ che accade se non da coloro che riusciranno ad accedere tramite un lavoro con le Ong ed organizzazioni caritatevoli e legali. Intanto l’ accesso a questi luoghi sta diventando sempre piu’ difficile.

Non so come sia riuscita ad entrare nel centro Ellinikon International Airpot, chiuso dal 2001. Volevo entrare per poter constatare le condizioni e sono riuscita a farlo con un ragazzo dell’Afghanistan che mi ha fatto svicolare dentro l’edificio. Ad ogni piano c’è una miriade di rifugiati che vivono in tende una accanto all’altra. La realta’ e’ devastante: non hanno accesso ad acqua per lavarsi. Alcuni non sono riusciti a lavarsi per settimane. Il cibo e’ scarso. Guardando il posto sembra che le persone siano rinchiuse in alti recinti di ferro; all’ interno vivono in tende o per terra su coperte date dall’ UNHCR. Non c’e’ posto tra una tenda e l’altra: dormire, mangiare e vivere in infinite file di umanita’. Coloro che hanno ricevuto una tenda o per mancanza di spazio nell’edificio, dormono fuori, all’aperto.

Il loro numero sta aumentando ogni giorno perchè molti tornano dai confini chiusi di Idomeni

The objectification of a human being

The objectification of people and their containment in large disused spaces are becoming the norm. The refugee crisis is unfortunately becoming more and more about ways to contain the large number of people seeking shelter and protection. These are slowly being transformed into hot spots and detention centres. Beyond these walls, we would not know much but news provided by NGOs and charities given permission to enter. In between these changes, access to open camps are becoming more difficult. I am not sure how I managed to access entry in Ellinikon International Airiport in Athens. I wanted so much to enter and witness the state of things, and I was just lucky to enter (or unlucky to see). One boy from Afghanistan led my way through the airport, which it has been closed down since 2001 and now the home of hundreds of families. The reality is sad and devastating. The worst part is that looking from the outside people seem to be fenced in. It is disturbing to see. Unfortunately, being able to have a shower is not possible. Families with children have begged for water to wash. A few lucky ones have been able to wash by the generosity of Greek people opening their homes to them. So in areas indoor people rest and live on a blanket given by the UNHCR. There is no space between a blanket to another. Sleeping, eating, living in endless rows of humanity. Those that have been given a tent, sleep outdoor. Their number is increasing by the day as many are returning from Idomeni closed border.

Sulla frontiera macedone c’è una fortissima militarizzazione, e giovedi sera la frontiera è stata chiusa completamente, per tutti senza discriminazione. Riaperta venerdi, in mattinata, ma solo per le tre nazionalità. Transitano ad un ritmo di una cinquantina di persone all’ora. Le attese, quindi, tornano ad essere enormi e si dilatano.

Secondo MSF a Idomeni c’è accoglienza solo per 900 persone, mentre giovedi notte circa 6000 persone hanno dormito li e se ne aspettavano circa 8000 per venerdi notte. Nel frattempo, il centro di accoglienza a Gevgelija, sul lato macedone del confine, si trova vuoto e inutilizzato.
Una ONG e gruppi di solidarietà locali hanno fornito cibo; Save the children e UNHCR stanno distribuendo i pasti. La polizia greca non riesce a sostenere le esigenze di tipo umanitario.

Giovedi circa 200 iraniani hanno bloccato i binari per non far transitare un treno che trasportava cittadini siriani in Macedonia, quindi anche tensioni tra le diverse nazionalità che divide le persone in desiderabili e non.

Anche la Serbia dal 18 fa passare solo le tre nazionalità prescelte senza alcuna valutazione della situazione individuale.
Circa 200 persone sono state rimpatriate collettivamente in Macedonia dove hanno trascorso la notte alla stazione ferroviaria Tabanovce in prefabbricati forniti dall’UNHCR. La notte successiva la Macedonia ha chiuso il suo confine e circa 100 persone sono riaste bloccate nella terra di nessuno al confine tra i due Paesi. Non è stato concesso l’accesso nemmeno all’UNHCR.
Sempre il 18 novembre la Croazia non fa transitare 440 persone dal suo confine con la Serbia. Le polizie di frontiera dei due Paese cooperano per evitare che le persone riescano a prendere i treni da Sid. Un gruppo di persone (incluse tre donne e due bambini) provenienti da paesi tra cui il Marocco, il Bangladesh e il Pakistan sono stati arrestati in Croazia e riportati in Serbia. Alcuni giorni fa, il

consiglio straordinario dei Ministri degli Interni e della Giustizia EU, ordine del giorno rafforzamento dei confini esterni e anche dell’area Schengen. Se non dovesse bastare le frontiere le esternalizziamo. Una risposta, che come già succede in Libia, non fa altro che rendere più pericoloso il passaggio delle persone. In definitiva, una risposta che stenta a cambiare rotta.
